Big Island hunters young and old came together Saturday for the third annual Keikis of the Aina Pig Hunting Tournament, bringing in an array of sow, boar and laho‘ole.
Thirty-two four-man teams took part in the pig hunting tournament, which kicked off at 6 a.m. Saturday, said Nakoa Pabre, event organizer. Each of teams had to include at least one person younger than 18 and had to utilize a hunting dog to find the pig. Teams could hunt at any legal location on the Big Island.
All participants then had to drop off their weapons before returning by 5 p.m. for weigh-in at the Puuanahulu Recreation Center. In order to qualify for prizes, at least 25 percent of the meat from the hunted pigs had to be donated to Pabre’s “Feeding the Homeless” project. Pabre said at least 25 of the more than 30 pigs brought in for weighing were donated to the project.
The all-day tournament also featured plenty of local food, entertainment, an ice cream truck and a play area for keiki, as well as a Kendama tournament.
Team Hemo Da Laho‘z, which hauled in the maximum four pigs, was named the tournament’s Heavyweight Champ. The team, which said it hunted “down south,” also claimed first place for its 166-pound boar and first place for longest tusk with a combined tusk measurement of 6 5/8 inches.
In the laho‘ole (castrated pig) category, Honaunau Hammaz claimed first place with a 161.2-pounder the team hunted in the Honaunau area.
The largest sow of the tournament was a 139.1 pounder hunted by the team, Outlawz.
